PS3 Launch: News Corporation vs Fairfax

It’s interesting to see the difference in the way that News Corporation and Fairfax Media reported on the PS3 launch last week.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports:

The launch of Sony’s PlayStation 3 games console got off to a feeble start last night with officials, media and security outnumbering customers for most of the evening.

The Australian IT section, in contrast, makes no mention of a poor turnout - simply saying that:

GAMERS queued outside retail stores across Australia to buy Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) from the stroke of midnight.

Agreed. I wonder if News Corporation either has share holdings in Sony, or if they share members on the board of directors?

Time to research…

Quote: “Desperate producers unashamedly asked the crowd to fake excitement when the cameras were rolling, while a team from 2Day FM let out bogus cheers to convince their radio listeners that a launch extravaganza was underway.” from SMH

That to me is some seriously frucked-up shit… is that what they learn at “media school” ?

Good pickup slightly taller than average dude ;)

Had a quick google on Sony/News ltd holdings to see if there is any dodginess, to no avail. Hows the search coming along?

The Australian IT section is an unabashed promotional section of what is otherwise usually a pretty good read. MOst portfolio sections in the Australian are, and most of the other news ltd papers are just shite in general. The Higher Education section is always used as a promo strip also…

I quickly looked at the major holdings and board of directors the other day, but didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.

I completely agree about the general content of the Australian being promo material.

The funny thing about the PS3 launch was that it wasn’t limited to News Ltd either. The commercial TV stations ran either news pieces or “current affairs” pieces on the launch, and failed to mention the disappointing turnout. Is PBL in on the game too?
