Surely I’m not alone in thinking that the new Cat Empire song “No Longer There” stinks?
I’m a big Cat Empire fan - I’ve seen them live a couple of times, and their show is fantastic. For the most part, their albums are spot on as well. But this latest song, a slow ode to environmentalism, is a train wreck. It honestly sounds more on par with karaoke at the Lord Stanley than a band that recently toured the US and the UK.
Felix, please leave the singing to Harry.

I am undecided on the song as far as how it sounds; his voice is certainly a little flat though.
I am pretty sick of everyone preaching in their music and it’s even worse when you’re at the gig and they want to preach in-between songs…
The video clip is a little dramatic as well…
Mmmm I am tending to agree with you here. You really need to work your strengths as a musician and Felix is the spitting poetry style, which he is very good at!
One thing I would also note, from a musicians perspective is…don’t force it. As a writer you always have a range of things you really want to write about and you are waiting for the right inspiration, tune, lyric to come along to inspire it. Sometimes you can force a track to be written and although you are passionate about the topic, the song comes out sounding flat and just not right.
There is a perfect union of music and lyric for every track, you just have to be patient for it to come along sometimes. I can see this being hard though when you haev a label sitting their putting you on a timeline to keep punching out albums. This is why an artists 1st album is usually so amazing…this is because that album is a compilation of all the songs, tracks and influence of the past 15-25 years all put into one album. Album no. 2 only has 9-18 months worth of experience to draw from etc etc.
I am keen to hear the rest of the album though…I have tickets to see them in London in November so lets hope the rest kicks ass
